Kids Rooms

Well, hubby finally let me go to town on the kids rooms (I guess he's starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!).

Here are some pics of the play room which is finished except for a couple of chairs for the munchkins to sit on for TV watching. I tried to make it appropriate for any kids 1-4 years old.

I would love your help on this:

I love this room (taken from Tip Junkie) but Jim hates it. I'm trying to find something we can agree on and it's so hard! I did a quick mock-up of the colors I'd like to use and it seriously looks like the kids will think they joined the circus!

Any ideas on something in between?

Stef thought the whole thing was boring.

You asked -- as an amateur interior designer :) these are my thoughts:
1. Your inspiration room is adorable mainly because the chosen palette is incredibly au courant. Unfortunately, your instincts about the colors used in the mock-up are right on. The reason for it looking so "circus-y" is because you are using variations of primary colors -- which will always come off looking hokey IMHO.

By simply changing up the colors you'll change the entire look and it'll be much more soothing and pleasant. I think it's a really cute design, but be prepared to keep things clean and clutter-free. The end result should look somewhat 1960's or at the very least modern.

I would look to the Pottery Barn kids for palette ideas. Their designers are incredibly at mixing and matching colors for the perfect look.

Good luck!
p.s. We're going for trip 2 to bring home our little girl on May 7th!

....oh yeah...one last thing. I just looked at the inspiration room again and the execution is super important. Your mock-up doesn't have overlapping circles, or circles of different sizes. I assume that you're going to use a template for the different size circles. That'll be important to the precise clean look.

Jane, I love what you have done to the playroom. I feel like I could go right in a play today. I love the ABCs over the window. I do like what you have chosen for the kids room and judging from what you have done in the playroom what ever you decide on will be perfect.

Congrats on your region! I'm just getting caught up, and I'm so excited for you all! It sounds like you are getting very close to getting referrals! And, I love your play room and your picks for the bedrooms! I love the "mod" style stuff! You're so creative!

The playroom is fabulous! What an awesome job! I don't have any advice for the circle room - it's really cool though!

Thanks for ALL the comments!
Verdict: I think we're going to wait to find out the gender of the kids before we paint... Maybe soon???

I recently went shopping at Kuhl and Linscomb (near Whole Foods on Kirby and Alamaba) and saw some incredible accessories in one of their off site homes. Also, if you ever find yourself in Sugar Land, Telfair community has all their model homes in a row, and I remember seeing some fantastic kid play rooms, although at this moment I can remember what builder it was.
